How to play
Rare Dive.
The rules for our independent Krillion-inspired game.
These rules apply to Rare Dive. Looking for the original game? Read what Krillion is and how to get started, including the differences between the two games.
Seven questions. One answer at a time.
Press Start to begin a dive. Each question names a category, such as a type of instrument or a place in the world. Type one member of that category and submit with Enter or the arrow button. There is no list of choices and no Wordle-style grid.
You have 25 seconds for each question. The first accepted answer locks in your score for that round. An unlisted answer does not end the question; you can keep trying until the timer reaches zero. Use “Pass this one” when you would rather move on. A passed or expired question earns zero points.
After each answer, the game shows your rarity tier and depth gained. Press Next question when you are ready. The next timer begins immediately, so take any break on the feedback screen. After the seventh question, press See my dive for your result.
Think in depth, not just correctness.
Answers in our original bank carry fixed editorial rarity ratings. Familiar responses earn fewer points; more unusual entries earn more. These labels describe this edition’s answer list. They are not real-time percentages or a scientific measure of how rare an answer is.
| Tier | Points | Depth gained |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | 10 | 100 m |
| Familiar | 15 | 150 m |
| Curious | 30 | 300 m |
| Rare | 60 | 600 m |
| Deep cut | 85 | 850 m |
| Abyssal | 100 | 1000 m |
Each point is worth 10 meters. Seven top-tier answers give you 700 points and a maximum depth of 7,000 meters. An accepted answer always beats a timeout, so there is a practical trade-off between searching for something unusual and submitting something you know.
A forgiving matcher, a finite list.
The matcher ignores upper and lower case, accents, and punctuation. It also ignores a leading “a,” “an,” or “the,” and treats “&” as “and.” For example, “The Crème Brûlée” and “creme brulee” match the same dessert entry. Common plurals and synonyms work when they are explicitly included as aliases.
We do not use an AI judge or fuzzy spelling correction. Some perfectly valid answers will be absent from this first edition. “Not in our curated list yet” means the list did not recognize your entry, rather than declaring your knowledge wrong. Try another answer while time remains.
Choose your kind of dive.
Daily Dive gives everyone the same seven prompts on the same UTC date. It resets at midnight UTC and uses a 98-question cycle, with no prompt repeated during any 14 consecutive days. A completed Daily is saved in this browser and cannot be restarted for that date.
Unlimited draws seven prompts from the original pool, without repeats inside that dive. Finish as many sessions as you like. A prompt may return in a future session. Your personal best includes both modes; your streak counts consecutive completed Daily dates.
Refresh, return, and share.
Your progress is saved locally when browser storage is available. Refreshing does not reset an active timer: if its deadline passes while you are away, the question expires when you return. Your records belong to this browser, so switching devices or clearing storage starts a new history.
The result screen lets you share or copy your score, depth, and seven rarity symbols. It leaves out prompts and answers. If clipboard access is blocked, a selectable text box appears so you can copy manually. Read our privacy page for what is saved.
Make yourself comfortable.
The settings button in the header offers larger text, higher contrast, a dark “Night dive” theme, and optional soft sound effects. Sound starts off. All actions work with a keyboard; feedback uses text as well as color. For a few practical habits before you start, visit Dive tips.
Curiosity, answered.
What is Rare Dive?
Rare Dive is a free category trivia game inspired by the Krillion game format. Answer seven open-ended prompts and earn more points for less familiar answers. It has its own original question bank and is not affiliated with krillion.io.
Is Rare Dive the official Krillion game?
No. The original game is at krillion.io. Rare Dive is an independent Krillion-inspired alternative with its own questions, answer lists, editorial scores, and Daily schedule. Your results here are separate from the original game.
Can I play a free Krillion Unlimited alternative here?
Yes. Rare Dive Unlimited offers repeatable seven-question trivia rounds with no daily limit, ads, payment, or sign-in. It uses our original 98-category bank. For the original Krillion Unlimited mode and its current access options, visit krillion.io.
How are answers scored?
Accepted answers have one of six editor-assigned scores: 10, 15, 30, 60, 85, or 100. Each point adds 10 meters of depth. Seven 100-point answers make a perfect 700 points, or 7,000 meters. These are editorial ratings, not live player popularity percentages.
When does the Daily Dive reset?
Daily Dive resets at midnight UTC. Everyone receives the same seven prompts on a given UTC date. This edition cycles through 98 original prompts without repeating any prompt within 14 consecutive days.
What if my answer is not accepted?
You can try again until the 25-second timer expires. The game uses a curated answer list rather than an AI judge, so an unlisted answer may still be factually valid. No points or time are deducted for an unaccepted attempt; the clock simply keeps running.
Do spelling and plurals matter?
Matching ignores capitalization, accents, punctuation, and an initial a, an, or the. An ampersand matches and. Common plurals, synonyms, and abbreviations are accepted where explicitly listed. The game does not use fuzzy spelling correction.
Is Unlimited free?
Yes. Unlimited lets you start as many seven-question dives as you like, drawn from the same 98-prompt original pool. Questions do not repeat within a single dive, but may appear again in later dives. There are no ads, payments, or sign-in requirements.
Can I come back to an unfinished game?
Yes, when browser storage is available. Your dive is saved locally after each change. An active question keeps its original deadline while you are away, so refreshing or switching tabs does not pause the clock. The next question starts only when you press Next question.
Does sharing reveal my answers?
No. Share and Copy include only your total score, depth, and a colored symbol for each question’s rarity tier. They do not include category names or answers.
